Angolan Basketball

Basketball in Africa has been a very popular sport and very competitive in that continent.

Angola is one of the countries in Africa who has been a solid supporter of basketball and one of the best. Angola is the country in South Central Africa and found below the Democratic Republic of Congo, west of Zambia and the top of Namibia and was influenced mostly by the Portugese.

They produced a large crowd of supporters in basketball and is the most popular sport in the country. They possess players who are gifted and has world-class talent, athletic and high-flying players and hardworking to train and learn.

Angola has the top national basketball team in Africa and had always been a regular competitor in FIBA World Championships and Summer Olympics. They are considered as the most organized and most dominant country in Africa in terms of basketball and is still progressing and could be one of the best in the World. Angola started participating in FIBA Africa in 1972 and since 1989, Angola has been a consistent champion up until in 2009.

In FIBA Africa Championship, Angola has always been a steady powerhouse and has been winning consistently because of their diverse talents and modernized organization. Being the top participant since 1989, they have always particapated in the Summer Olympics but their talents has not yet been enough to play competitively among the world’s greatest teams.

Angola has not yet formed a professional basketball league. The country is also being scouted by the NBA looking for talents that can compete in high-level basketball and there are Angolan players sent in the US but there are still no one succeeding entering it.

The country also have a women’s national basketball team and won the 1983 FIBA Africa Championship for women which Angola is the host country. They did not excel as much as the men’s basketball team in FIBA Africa but they have won several medals in their participating years and have been competitive since.

They won bronze medal in 1981, 1986, 1994, 2007 and 2009 and 1 gold in 1983. Women’s basketball team has been improving and looking for being the top team in FIBA Africa and soon to be participating in FIBA World Championship for women.

Angola’s Dominant Years In FIBA Africa

There are 53 national African teams participating in FIBA Africa and it is divided in 6 zones. Angola is part of the zone 6. In their 16 appearances in FIBA Africa, they are the champions in the years 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

In FIBA World Championship, they are ranking as the 13th team in the world and has only 5 appearances in the tournament and still striving and working hard to be if not one of the best teams but at least one of the recognizable teams in the world. There are potential talents in their teams that one day could bring Angola to the top bracket and achieve their dream to be the best.
