WNBA Coaches

How can a team survive without a coach? A team without a coach would be chaotice.
Different ideas from different players, which would probably end up in a fight within the members because they would not know what to do and they would not know to whom they would listen. Though the players in the Women’s National Basketball Association are all professionals, they still need a coach.

So, should the coach of an all girl team be a girl also? Who are the famous female WNBA coaches in the history of WNBA? By the end of this article, one will be able to know the answers to theses questions.

Van Chancellor was the head coach of the Houston Comets for ten years, from 1997 to 2007. Houston Comets was one of the first teams of the Women’s National Basketball Association. In fact, by the coaching strategies of Mr. Van Chancellor, the Houston Comets won the WNBA Finals for four cosecutive years.

For the first three years of winning the WNBA Finals(1997, 1998 and 1999), Van Chancellor was named the WNBA Coach of the year. During 1998, the Houston Comets holds the record for hightest winning percentage in the history of both the NBA and the WNBA basketball. Van Chancellor also coached the Western Conference All-Star Team three times during his coaching career in the WNBA. Lastly, he was named the WNBA’s All-Decade Team in June 2006.

Ann Donovan is one of the WNBA Coaches today. She is currently the head coach of New York Liberty. She is the only person that has both played to a national women’s college title and coached a team to a professional title. Ann Donovan was also the coach of Seattle Storm. When she was with the Seattle Storm, the team won one WNBA Finals, in the year 2004.

Ann Donovan is considered as one of the most outstanding head coaches in WNBA. Some of her awards and honors are: inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995, inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in the yar 1999, was named by the Sun Belt Conference as its All-Time Women’s Basketball Player, USA Basketball named Donovan head coach of the 2008 Beijing Olympics US Women’s team.
One of the WNBA Coaches in the Women’s National Basketball Association is Marynell Meadors. She is both a college basketball coach and a professional basketball coash. She is the head coach of the Atlanta Dream, which won the WNBA Finals in season 2009. Marynell Meadors was one of the eight original head coaches since the WNBA started in 1997.

She was both the head coach and the general manager of the Charlotte Sting. Ron Terwilliger, the owner of the Atlanta dream, hired Marynell Meadors to be the head coach of the Dream on November 27, 2007. The same year that the Atlanta Dream won the WNBA finals, the head coah, Marynell Meadors was also named WNBA coach of the year.

The WNBA Coaches mentioned above really deserved the honors that they were awarded for they did their best so that the team they are coaching would show their full basketball potential. The WNBA coaches can be a man or a woman, it doesn’t matter, as long as he or she brings the best out of the team.
