Jean-Jacques Conceicao

Jean-Jacques Conceicao is a former professional Angolan player played in power forward position.

He is born on April 3, 1964 in Kinhasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He retired on February 21, 2002. He is listed as 6’6 and speaking portugese as his main language.

He is a dual citizen of Portugal and Angola so he also played in European leagues. In Portugal, he played for the Benfica and he won seven nationa championships and three cups of Portugese League. He also played for CSP Limoges from France and for the Portugal Telecom.

By having two citizenships, Jean-Jacques has decided to represent Angola as his country in competing in international tournaments. In FIBA Africa Championship he lead the Angolan National Team to seven titles in the years 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003 and in 1997, a bronze medal.

He also played for Angol at the World Cup finals in 1986, 1990 and 1994. He also participated at the Olympic Games in 1992 and 1996.

His height is small for an average power forward but his leaping ability gave him the edge and advantage among the rest of the power forwards envying him because he makes them looks slow and heavy-footed.

He is known for his intensity and was the heart and soul of the Angolan National Team. Despite playing most of his career years in Europe, he is still considered a legend in Angolan basketball and also in African Basketball. No one in the history of any Angolan player has yet to matched his achievements and performance in basketball.

In Benfica Team in Portugal, he was the key player and successfully leading them to win the seven league titles. In 1993-1994 Euroleague season, he averaged 19.2 points per game(ppg), sixth in the league and 11.18 rebounds per game(rpg), 4th in the league. Next season, he averaged 18.9 ppg(8th league scorer) and 11.5 rpg(2nd league rebounder). In 1995-1996, his numbers dropped, he is not in the top 10 scorers in the league and he only averaged 7.0 rpg.

His final game for Angola was in Egypt for the 2003 FIBA Africa Championship, where the Angolan National Team has won over the Nigerian National Team in the final game which gave them the gold medal.

Eventually he retired from playing professional basketball in 2002, he moved on to another career to become the Vice President of the Angolan Basketball Federation which serves as the one organizing the Angolan Men’s and Womens Team.
