Joaquim Gomes Bio

Joaquim Gomes was born in December 23, 1980 in Luanda, Angola, nicknamed Kikas, is a 6’9, Angolan Basketball Player, playing thePower Forward or Center positions.

He played in Germany and Netherlands and played for the Petro Atletico in Angola in the years 1998 to 2000, University of Valparaiso, RheinEnergie Köln, Eiffel Towers Den Bosch and currently playing for the Clube Desporitivo Primeiro de Agosto in Angola.

In the years 2000-2004, Joaquim played for the University of Valparaiso in Indiana wherein he is a stand-out player. He averaged 13.1 points per game and grabbing 8.8 rebounds per game in his senior year. He had a career-high 23 points in their win over the IUPUI in the final of the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament.

Undrafted in 2004, Joaquim Gomes played for German Bundesliga for one year and averaged 5.7 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game. Then later on joined the Eiffel Tower Den Bosch in Netherlands.

He won the German Basketball Cup with RheinEnergie Koln back in 2005.

He played for Angolan National Basketball Team in the 2004 Summer Olympics , 2006 FIBA World Championships and 2007 FIBA Africa Championship.

He entered the national basketball team when he was only 19 years old. He is regarded as one of the basketball stars to watch last 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He defended and played with NBA Superstars such as Pau Gasol, Yao Ming, Carlos Boozer and Kevin Durant.

He was voted for the 2006 Interbasket African Player of the Year, for his great performance in the 2006 FIBA World Championships beating other African NBA players Luol Deng, Ime Udoka, Dikembe Mutombo and DeSagana Diop.

Joaquim Gomes is ranked as one of the top of the list best African basketball players. He became THE power forward for Angolan basketball after the legendary Jean-Jacques Conceicao retired. Being under the direction of Jean-Jacques, Joaquim learned to play and adapt to world level class of basketball play.

He is currently more of a defender and rebounder rather than an offensive scorer and it is fascinating that he could play the power forward and center position effectively. He has the experience in playing for Angolan national basketbal team in the Summer Olympic games last 2004 and FIBA world Championship in 2002 and winning 3 championship in FIBA Africa Championship.
