History Of The Basketball In Slovenia

On the year 1905, basketball which is called korbal was played in schools and physical training societies.

The more formal beginnings were in 1921. Sokol Maribor society member Ciril Hocevar, who is a physical education teacher was the initiator and promoter of basketball in Slovenia.He studied for the higher education acceptance exams in Prague at Tyrs Institute which enables him to master the rules of basketball.

After the World War II, the popularity of basketball in Slovenia rises. When basketball was introduced, many young people were excited. On January 15, 1950, basketball has been played in many places in Slovenia which were organized majority by the physical education teachers at school and sport societies. Tine Benedicic is the first president of Basketball Association of Slovenia.

The first Slovenian born player to play for the Yugoslav national basketball team was Mirko Amon. He played for the Ljubljana club Zeleznicar on 1950 and regarded as the best shooter of the Yugoslav federal league. He is also part of the national team that competed in the first World Championship in Argentina. For the next 40 years, Slovenian basketball players had a significant role in the former Yugoslavia.

Since the beginning, the basketball in Slovenia has been a special thing in Europe and internationally. Like for this instance, the former slovenian player,Ivo Daneu, who is a legend was inducted in the FIBA Hall of Fame. The former players of the teams, Maribor and Ljubljana Olimpija, has been the huge part in the ranks of Yugoslavia where he won numerous of medals at the European and World Championship.
