Lithuanian Basketball Coaches

Basketball in Lithuania is really a big sport that is always being looked forward to.

But Lithuanian teams and players will never have a good game plan if not with the help of Basketball coaches who have great talents and dedication in terms of leading a basketball team.

Do you want to know some of the great Lithuanian coaches who can leads basketball teams? Well, here’ a sneak peak of them:

• Valderamas Chomičius or most popularly known as Valderamas Homicius is a retired Professional Lithuanian basketball player for the Lithuania itself and also Soviet national basketball teams. After his retirement as a basketball player he first became as an assistant coach for Lithuanian National Team. After some time, he stepped one level higher and became as the head coach for the UNICS Kazan in Russia.

Homicius, when he was still a point a guard basketball player playing for the Žalgiris Kaunas , was remembered as “Captain from the Golden Years” as they had three consecutive championships in the USSR against their opponent which is the CSKA Moscow in the year 1985 to 1987. Other than Zalgiris Kaunas, he also played for the Russian teams of CAI Zaragoza and Forum Valladolid and for Italian team of Aprimatic Bologna in the 1990 to 1991 seasons. In 2005, he was the head coach for the Lithuanian National team to win in the Stankovic Continental championship cup which was held in China.

• Ramūnas Butautas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania by the 22nd of May, 1964. He is one of the most famous Lithuanian coaches and is the head coach for Zalgiris Kaunas team in the year 2009. He is a good son of Stepas Butautas. On the 28th of December, 2006 he was appointed by the executive committee of the Basketball Federation of Lithuania as the head coach for the Lithuanian National Basketball team for men.

• Valdas Garastas who was born on the 8th of February, 1932 in Linkuva, is certainly one of the famous Lithuanian Basketball players during his time. He is the current president for the Lithuanian Basketball federation.

His coaching career started after he had his retirement as a basketball player. He then became the coach of the Zalgiris Kaunas club and the Soviet Union’s National team (1989 to 1991). He also acted as the head coach for the following teams: Galatasaray (1990 to 1991), Lithuanian National Team (1992 to 1997) and Atletas Kaunas (1994 to 1996).

• Rimantas Grigas was born on 1962. He replaced Aco Petrovic and now the current basketball head coach for the Zalgiris Kaunas. Before signing for the Zalgiris Kaunas, he also was the head coach of Atletas Kaunas in the year 1996 to 1999. He was also the assistant coach for Ainars Bagatski who was the head coach of Atletas Kaunas before. When he was the head coach for the BC Zalgiris, the team won in the Lithuanian Basketball Federation’s Cup on February 7, 2007 and in May 22 of the same year, they won the Lithuanian Basketball Leaguer Gold medal.

• Rimas Kurtinaitis is another famous basketball trainer and at the same time the head coach of the VEF Riga. He is a retired Lithuanian national Basketball team and USSR basketball player. He played as an effective shooting guard who is famous because of the fact that he is the only Non-NBA player who was able to participate in the NBA All-Star contest in the Three-point category.

In the year 1997, he was regarded as the Lithuanian Ministry of Sport and in the year 2003 he was appointed to become the head coach for Azerbaijan National Team.
