Yugoslavian Basketball Team

Basketball is what people are fond of playing as well as watching.

A country will never be complete if basketball is not included in their sport. Yugoslavia is investing blood and sweat in this field too. In fact they have Yugoslavia Basketball Team.

Yugoslavia

Yugoslavia is a term that describes three political entities. The first country to be known is Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It was named before as Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. It was established in December 1, 1989 by the union of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs and the Kingdom of Serbia.

The second country is Democratic Federal Yugoslavia it is the largest Yugoslav state. it was proclaimed in 1943 by the Yugoslav Partisans resistance movement during the World War II. In 1946 it was renamed to the Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia when a communist government was established.

In 1963 it was renamed again to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The constituent six Socialist Republics and two Socialist Autonomous Provinces that made up the country were: SR Bosbia and Herzegovina, SR Croatia, SR Macedonia, SR Montenegro, SR Slovenia and SR Serbia.

Yugoslavia basketball Team

The Yugoslavian National Basketball Team is represented by Kingdom and Socialist Yugoslavia. The seat governing body of this team is located in Belgrade.

After Socialist Federation Republic of Yugoslavia had a dissolution in year 1990 the national team of the Federal Republic Yugoslavia became the successor of the SFR Yugoslavian team. When Montenegro gained its independence in year 2006, FIBA considered the Serbian national basketball team is the indirect successor of the FR Yugoslavia.

Yugoslavia in European Basketball

The Yugoslavia Basketball also joined the European Basketball League, or also know as the EuroBasket. The EuroBasket is a bi-annual basketball competition held between the nations of Europe.

They had 21 appearances in the said EuroBasket league, and among these 21 appearances, the Yugoslavian Basketball Team bacame a medalist 17 times. They won the gold medal eight times(1973, 1975, 1977, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1997, and 2001), the silver medal five times (1961, 1965, 1969, 1971, and 1981), and the bronze medal four times( 1963, 1979, 1987, 1999).

How amazing is that? One of the most important EuroBasket events in the Yugoslavian Basketball team history is the EuroBasket 1947. It is important because it was the team’s first time to reach the European Baketball Championships.

The Women

The Yugoslavians do not just have the men’s basketball team to be proud of, they also have the women’s basketball team. The Yugoslavia Women’s Team also participated in the Olympic Games, and they did not just participated, they did their best, that’s why they earned a silver medal during the 1988 Olympic Games held in Seoul.

They were also the bronze medalist in the 1980 Olympic Games that was held in Moscow. The Yugoslavia Basketball team also participated in the EuroBasket, women’s division. They had a total of six medals, four of them are silver and the other two were bronze.
