Sophie Young Bio

Obviously, every basketball team must field a team of skilled players. Without players who know what to do on the court, a team will have absolutely no hope of winning a game.

The San Antonio Silver Stars take this fact to heart, and consistently put players on the court who have excellent basketball skill. A team’s post is especially important because she plays in the front of the court, near the team’s basket. This allows her to set up for mid-range jump shots, as well as for assists.

The San Antonio Silver Stars’ Sophia Young serves the team well with her amazing skills as a forward. In 2010, she averaged 15.5 points per game and 9 rebounds per game and has undoubtedly been instrumental in leading her team to victories.

College Career

Young began her basketball career I high school, but it did not really take off until college. She joined Baylor University’s basketball team as a freshman, and throughout her four years on the team further developed into the player that she is today.

Over the course of her college basketball career, she averaged 16.5 points per game and scored a total 2,480 points, ranking her number one in Big 12 scoring history.

Young was also awarded several honors during her college career. In 2006, she was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. Further, she was twice named United States Basketball Writers Association All-American, and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team three times. She was also a finalist for both the Wooden Award and the Wade Trophy and was consistently on the Naismith Trophy Watch List.

The WNBA Play

Sophie Young began her WNBA career right after college. She was selected by the San Antonio Silver Stars in the first round of the 2006 WNBA draft. That same year, she was named to the Western Athletic Conference’s All-Star Team, becoming one of only four rookies to be selected for the team. She also made a splash on the Silver Stars, leading her team in scoring and starting in all 34 games they played.

From that excellent rookie year, Young has continued to grow and her basketball skills have developed immensely. In 2008 she was named to the first-team all-WNBA and first-team all-defensive. That year she also lead her team to the WNBA Finals against the Detroit Shock.

Personal Life

Young was born on December 15, 1983 in St. Vincent, West Indies. She attended high school in the United States at Evangel Christian Academy located in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Not surprisingly, Young’s interests extend far beyond the basketball court. She loves movies, and sites Jack Black’s comedy Nacho Libre as one of her favorites. She also enjoys listening to jazz music, but when it comes to food, she prefers less sophisticated fare, like hot dogs or chicken with rice.

Young, like many of her Silver Stars teammates, enjoys a diverse array of outdoor activities. She loves laying on the beach and swimming in the ocean, along with hiking and camping.
