The San Antonio Silver Stars boast a roster of some truly amazing players.
Many of their players are well seasoned, with at least six years of professional play under their belts. Two of their players have played professional basketball for 12 years, a feat that cannot be denied. One is an Australia native; the other grew up in Rapid City, South Dakota. Their names are Tully Bevilagua and Becky Hammon.
Tully Bevilaqua
Tully Bevilaqua was born and raised in Merriden, Western Australia. Bevilaqua began her WNBA career in 1998 when she was signed as a free agent by the Cleveland Rockers, but only played in 12 games before they decided to waive her as a player.
Two years later, she was signed again as a free agent for the Portland Fire. She played 3 consecutive seasons for the Fire, until the franchise folded in 2002. She then played two seasons for the Seattle Storm, who was the 2004 WNBA Champion. Bevilaqua played an instrumental role, along with All-Star Sue Bird to win the championship game.
In 2005, she signed with the Indiana Fever, where she started in a whopping 32 games, averaging 6.2 points per game and made 80 assists throughout the season. She undoubtedly catalyzed the Fever’s remarkable change from average to great. She played for the Fever until 2010. After the 2010 season, Bevilaqua was signed to the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Bevilaqua also played professionally for the Canberra Capitals, a WNBL team in Australia. Further, in 2008 lead the Australian Olympic basketball team to a silver medal, and in 2006 she helped earn the Australian team a gold in the World Championships.
Becky Hammon
Becky Hammon is another well-seasoned basketball player. She has been named a WNBA All-Star five times, in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. In the 2010 season, Hammon averaged 20 points per game, making her an undeniable team leader. She was traded to the Silver Stars to the New York Liberty in exchange for Jessica Davenport.
Hammon also had an illustrious college basketball career. Playing for Colorado State University, she was named 1999 the Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and made the WAC All-Newcomer team. Also, during her senior season, she led her team in scoring, steals, field goals, assists and three-point field goals.
This shows her obvious all-around skill as a basketball player. She finished her college basketball career as the highest scorer in both men’s and women’s basketball with 2,740 points total. 2009 marked Hammon’s best season yet in the WNBA. She averaged 19.5 points per game, second only to the Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi. She also was third in the league for average number of assists per game with 5.
In addition to basketball, Hammon has many other interests. Several of them are outdoor athletic endeavors, including scuba diving, hunting and deep sea fishing. She also loves camping, coffee, karaoke and is an avid drum player. She loves watching American Idol and taking her dog Cody for walks.
