In November of 1999, the people of Bexar County in San Antonio, Texas decided that it was time for a new arena to be built.
This arena was to become the home of the San Antonio Spurs and the Stock Show and Rodeo. It later became home to the San Antonio Silver Stars in 2002 when the team moved to San Antonio from Utah.
The arena cost a whopping 175 million dollars and was designed cooperatively by the Spurs and the Stock Show and Rodeo. They were able to get this staggering sum of money through a $28.5 million payment from the Spurs and $146 million from the county.
This sum from the county was obtained by increasing the tax on local hotel occupancy and car rental taxes (collectively referred to as the visitor tax). The goal was to build a facility with the capability of hosting rodeos, championship sporting events, concerts and any other type of high-quality entertainment.
After the center ha been open for 10 years, Bexar County approved an extension of the visitor tax to finance various initiatives, and was able to set aside a portion of that money to upgrade the AT&T Center.
