Maryland Terrapins Women’s Basketball 2010-2011

The University of Maryland women’s basketball team was ranked 13th in the NCAA Division 1 standings posted February 28.
The Terrapins entered the ACC Tournament quarterfinals with an overall record of 23-7 and a conference record of 9-5. They faced Georgia Tech in the quarterfinals where Georgia Tech took the win with a score of 70-64.

Maryland’s Season

The Terps had a great run this season. They went into the ACC Conference Tournament as the fourth seed and fell to the fifth seeded Georgia Tech in a close match.

Most games played this season were won by 10 or more points, most being 15 or more, with the exception of one game. This team comes to win and win by a lot. The loss to Georgia Tech didn’t come lightly as there were 12 lead changes and at least one big run made by each team.

Georgia Tech had 25 turnovers, which the Terps were able to convert into 30 points. In the end, Georgia Tech was able to pull it out with a 26-6 run and foul trouble on Maryland’s end. Brenda Frese leads the University of Maryland, but she looks to junior Lynetta Kizer and freshman Alyssa Thomas for leadership on the court.

About The Team

Brenda Frese has just completed her 9th season as head coach of the Terps. Since becoming head coach she has led the Terps to a National Championship, seven winning seasons, six straight 20-win seasons, three 30-win seasons and six-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. In addition to this all her recruiting classes have been ranked in the Top 15, including seven in the Top 15 and four in the Top 5.

Junior Lynetta Kizer was named to the All-ACC Second Team. This is her third career win in addition to receiving ACC Rookie of the Year (2009) and All-ACC Third Team (2010). She averaged 8.2 rebounds per game, 14.4 points per game, 73.7% from the foul line, and 3.6 offensive rebounds during conference play.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas was also named to the All-ACC Second Team. She is only one of two freshman to receive All-ACC honors this season. Thomas averaged 15.7 points per game, 8.4 rebounds per game, 3.8 offensive rebounds per game, and 2.1 steals per game. In addition to this, she set a new school record with seven Rookie of the Week Awards and five double-doubles in the first six games of conference play.
