Countries have their own national teams in different sports that they would participate in. Just like the other teams, Japan has their own national team too.

Japan has a national team for men and women’s baseball, football, basketball, ice hockey, volleyball and cricket. These are just some of the sports that Japan participates in.

Japan’s national basketball team is handled by the Japan Basketball Association, or the JBA. The Japan’s national basketball team started to participate in thedifferent tournaments in the year 1936, which was the first of Japan’s international tournament appearances. Japan’s national women’s basketball team won the silver medal, after being defeated by the Soviet Union national women’s basketball team, in the 1975 FIBA World Championships for women.

FIBA Asia Championships

Japan did not only participate in world tournaments, but also in Asian tournaments. Even thought Japan’s national basketball team did not achieved any medals in the international tournaments, it’s okay because they gathered almost all the medals in the FIBA Asia Championships.
