The Indiana Fever has been successful, not only because of the extreme talent of the players, but because of the leadership and guidance from the coaching staff.
The experience of the coaching staff has the ability to get players to win games or squander the talent. In this case, the coaches have made the most out of every opportunity.
Head Coach
Lin Dunn is the fourth head coach in Fever franchise history. Dunn has a proven track record of winning programs at both the college and professional levels.
She was recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame for her work and success with her teams. Dunn was the assistant coach for the Fever for four seasons before returning to the helm of the franchise. In 2009, Dunn was the runner-up for the WNBA’s Coach of the Year award. After two seasons with Indiana, Dunn can now boast of having 564 career wins.
She guided the Fever to the first-ever WNBA Finals championship and the Eastern Conference’s top seeded team. Since beginning in the WNBA in 2000, a WNBA championship title has eluded her. She helped build the Seattle Storm team into an eventual championship team and continues to do that with the Fever.
The 2009 WNBA playoffs was the league’s most watched Finals series with the outcome decided in the fifth and final game. Dunn and the Fever lost to the Phoenix Mercury. As an assistant coach, her on-court duties included making the Fever tough on defense, which she has continued in her head coaching responsibilities.
Assistant Coaches
Gary Kloppenburg is in his third season as the assistant coach with the Fever. Kloppenburg is no stranger to Dunn’s coaching style as they worked together with the Seattle Storm. Previous to this, Kloppenburg was on the staff of the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.
Kloppenburg is known for his knowledge on defense and this works perfectly with Dunn’s philosophy about defense. Kloppenburg has also worked with the Phoenix Mercury, NBA’s Toronto Raptors, and two different CBA teams. He has worked with every level of basketball starting at a California Community College to the NBA, WNBA, Continental Basketball Association, and also internationally.
Stephanie White is also in her third season with the Fever. White is extremely familiar with this league as she used to play in it. She spent five years in the WNBA with the Charlotte Sting for a season and four with the Fever. White was forced to retire after injuries kept her from playing like she could. Her Fever duties include recruiting, on-court coaching, scouting, and training the team athletes.
White still loves the game and has continued to pass on her knowledge to future generations of players. She is an alumni of Purdue and received the Wade Trophy National Player of the Year award for her phenomenal play in leading Purdue to the their first National Title. She was also named Indiana’s NCAA Woman of the Year and Big Ten Conference Player of the Year.
