Famous Basketball Players In Latvia

The no. 15 and current player in the Golden State Warriors is Andris Biedriņs.

Bendrins is a national of Latvia who is fortunate to be one of the import players in the National Basketball Association. The 7ft professional basketball player who plays as a Power Forward or a Center was Drafted in the first round, 11 overall, by the Golden State Warriors of the NBA Draft in 2004.

Since his teenage years, Bierdins was active in Latvia. He was 15 years old when he became a member of the Latvian national team at the Euro Cadet Championship. He ends up 4th in the scoring and 3rd in rebounding. Some of his the notable games played were against Italy with 26 points and 20 rebounds and Georgia with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Biedrins started his professional career at the age of 16 in 2002 to 2003 season of the BkSkonto which is a Latvian team. His performance in the team is successfully great wherein he was named the Latvian League Newcomer of the year. He also appeared in 28 LBL games in his second season and after the season, it made himself a qualified player in 2004 NBA Draft.

During his rookie year in 2004-2005, he is only 18 years old making him the youngest player in the league. In 2009,alongside with Stephen Jackson, Bierdins was called co- captain.

Kaspars Kambala or “Kas”is a 6’9” professional basketball player who plays a forward-center position. Aside from being a basketball player he is also a former professional boxer.

Kambala started his career when he was in high school and in college. He continued it in Europe and played for different teams including the Latvia national Basketball team.The teams that he played for are Efes Pilsen (2001-2003), in 2003-2004 plays for Real Madrid, in 2004-2005 UNICS Kazan,in 2005-2007 for Fenerbahce, in 2007-2009 for ASK Riga, in 2009-2010 for Enisey Krasnoyarsk, in 2010 Lukoil Akademikand at 2010 to the present he plays for AliağaPetkim.

Kambala won awards in 1998 as the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Champions and received an honor in 2000, the Mountain West Conference Regular Season and Tournament both from UNLV.Ainars Bagatskis was a small Forward player before in the Latvian National Basketball team. He was a member of the team since 1992 until 2006 wherein he participated in EuroBasket final tournaments for four times. He is now the coach of the Latvia National team.

Bagatskis contributed to the success of the team and won some awards. He was a member when the team won the Latvian National Championship for several times, participated when the team became the winner of the Lithuanian Basketball League for two times. He was also present when the team was the winner in the Norway Premier Basketball League (1993-2004), 3rd place in the North European Basketball League (2002-2003) and winner at the 2005-2006 Baltic Basketball League.

Valdis Valters was a retired Point Guard, Latvian Basketball player, for USSR. In the 1980s he was considered as one of the greatest player who played the game in Europe.

Valters is now a Basketball coach and the most talented players in Latvian basketball were once coached by him. He created the Keizarmezs, formerly the Valtera Basketbola Skola (VBS).
