Connecticut College Women Basketball

The University of Connecticut has always been known for their dedication to athletics.

There is no exception when it comes to the women’s basketball program. Led by head coach Geno Auriemma, this athletic program has set many different records this season and will continue to fight to maintain the number one spot.

The Season So Far

This season has been marked with record setting performances, not only by the team but by individuals as well. One such performance is the impressive 90 game winning streak. The Huskies beat Florida State to gain their 89th win, surpassing the previous 88 game wining streak set by John Wooden’s UCLA men from 1971-1974.

The following win over Pacific continued to set the bar as a record breaking 90th win was gained by the Huskies. This streak was soon ended by a loss to Stanford. UConn has also won its fifth-straight regular season title and No. 1 seed into the Big East Women’s Basketball Championship. Connecticut went undefeated in regular season play this year, only the 9th time in their program history. Currently they are set to play in the quarterfinal game.

About The Team

Connecticut has worked extremely hard to get where they are today, however, one player spearheads their efforts: Maya Moore. Moore was selected to the USA Basketball Women’s World Championship Team, repeat selection to the Academic All-America of the Year team, Most Outstanding Performer at the 2010 Division I Tournament, winner of the Wade Trophy, and all-time scoring leader, just to name a few.

She is the third leading scorer in the nation and 14th leading scorer in the NCAA Division I history. This is Moore’s fourth and final year as a Husky and we can only expect more great things to come. It is important to note, that in addition to Moore, Freshman Bria Hartley is also one to watch. Geno Auriemma has continued to build a solid program and bring in quality athletes. He has won seven national championships and led his team with a record-breaking 90 game win streak.

About The University of Connecticut

Not only does this university have accomplished athletic programs, it also has very competitive educational programs. Ranked by U.S News & World Report as the number one public school in New England and top 30 in the nation.

The University of Connecticut boasts as having its own Schools of Law, Social Work, Medicine, and Dental Medicine, as well as 10 other schools and colleges. In addition to the various programs of study, it also has 99 different majors, 86 research and professional fields of practice and study, and five professional degree programs.

The university can boast of these accolades because of the continued dedication of its professors. Professors continue to take a genuine interest in their students learning, as well as their own. Many have received accolades, awards, and scholarships for their studies of expertise.

The University of Connecticut has had a noteworthy season thus far. Both players and coaches continue to strive for excellence not only on the court but in the classroom as well. Coming into the Division 1 tournament as the number one seed will no doubt bring about more well-played basketball.
