Baylor College Women Basketball

The Baylor University Bears are ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division 1 standings as reported on February 28.

Baylor is ranked 3rd behind Connecticut and Stanford, respectively. Baylor plays in the Big 12 Conference, with a record of 13-1 for the conference and 26-2 overall.

The Bears only have one more game left before tournament play, and you can expect Baylor to give everything they have.

The Season

Baylor University has continued to make basketball look easy. With only two loses of the season, the first from the number one ranked team Connecticut and the second from Texas Tech, Baylor has consistently beaten teams by margins of 10 plus points. Of course there have been some nail biting games, such as the most recent one point win game against Oklahoma.

The Bears have won their fourth overall Big 12 Championship and second regular season title this year. In addition to that they have had 10 games shooting 50% or better from the field and have shown 8 different starting lineups.

Usually led by Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims, this team has shown its depth as different players continue to step up each game.

About The Team

Head coach and hall of famer Kim Mulkey leads the Baylor Bears. She is the only person, man or woman, to win a basketball national championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. She took over the program in 2000 and since then has led her team to the 2005 NCAA Championship, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, 10, 20-win seasons, two Final Four appearances and three Big 12 Conference titles.

On the court Baylor is lead by sophomore Brittney Griner and freshman Odyssey Sims. Griner has scored double-figures in 62 of her 63 career games, 29 coming from this season. She has also achieved her 19th, 20 plus point game and 35th of her career, as well as being the Big 12 Player of the Week three times this season.

Griner continues to be a force down low and will continue to be a focus of other teams to stop. Although Sims is a freshman, she has made her mark on the Baylor basketball program.

She has been given the honor of being the Big 12 Freshman of the Week three times this season. In addition to that she has scored 20 double-figure point performances, the most being 37 against Oklahoma. She continues to be in the starting lineup and show her skills.

About The School

Baylor University is a Christian college that strives to give a balanced academic and extra curricular life. The 2010 freshman class had an average SAT score of 1218, making it the highest in university history.

In addition to this, students, faculty, and staff on local community service projects spent over 150,000 hours. There are over 151 areas of study at Baylor and is a nationally ranked private school according to U.S. News & World Report.

Baylor still has a tough schedule ahead with one last game and then tournament play. A very experienced coach and two women who have consistently led their team from the beginning lead the Bears. In addition to sports, Baylor University seeks to find a balance between academic and athletic life.
