Boomers is very much known in the country because of their ability in playing basketball.
Boomers are the Australian men’s national basketball team which debuted on the international stage during the 1956 Olympic Games which was held in Melbourne, the Australian national basketball team players did not do well during that competition.
They had only defeated Singapore and Thailand which made them be ranked 12th in the game but the team didn’t lose hope in that failure, until now they are still coping with the skills of their competitors.
Here are some men’s notable Australian national basketball team players:
David Emil Andersen
Andersen is a member of the senior Australian national basketball team. He won the gold medal at the FIBA Oceania Championship 2003, FIBA Oceania Championship 2005 and FIBA Oceania Championship 2007.
He also represented Australia at both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics Basketball Tournament. Andersen played in the Euroleague for 9 seasons where he was a part of three Euroleague championship teams: Virtus Bologna 2001, CSKA Moscow 2006, 2008. He is a power forward-center and he can play at the center position. In Europe he was not known for being a defensive player and rebounder for his size, but for being a good offensive power forward that could both spread the floor and score in the low post.
David Barlow
Barlow’s career started when he began training under Brian Goorjian with the Victoria Titans in 2001. A year later he played College basketball at Metro State in Denver under former NBL coach Mike Dunlap.
After a short stint in College basketball, David returned to Australia and was a finalist for 2003 Youth Player of the Year in the Big V (ABA) whilst playing with the Sandringham Sabres. In 2004, David made his NBL debut with the Sydney Kings and although he saw limited game time in his first two seasons he improved enormously and was one of the reasons that Sydney became such a dominant team in the competition.
He became one of Australian national basketball team players in the 2006 World Championships where he averaged 6 points per game. David Barlow was beginning to find some form during the 2006-07 NBL season but was struck down with a season ending knee injury. Keen to return back to Victoria, David signed with the Melbourne Tigers in 2007.
Brad Newley
Brad Newley played professionally with the Townsville Crocodiles in 2004-05 NBL season. His efforts, in this breakout season earned him the NBL Rookie of the Year award as well as the NBL Best Sixth Man award.
In addition, he was named in the NBL’s domestic All-Star team. Playing in this exhibition NBL Australian League All-Star Game he was selected as MVP. His style of game is extremely skilled, he is an excellent jump shooter and defender and has a trademark two handed dunk. After numerous tryouts with various teams he was drafted by the Houston Rockets.
Although he was not guaranteed a contract, Brad participated in the 2007 Vegas Summer League with the Rockets. Recognizing that he needed to improve certain areas of his game, Newley opted to play in the higher level of the Greek League with Panionios Athens, rather than return to the NBL and play with the 36ers. With his skills he was considered one of the most notable Australian national basketball team player of all time.
