The Atlanta Dream has made a name for themselves with their tough play and tenacious attitudes.
The Atlanta Dream turned a rookie season with an overall record of 4-30 into a team that made it to the WNBA Finals with a sweep over the New York Liberty. This huge improvement is due to the hard efforts of the players, who have become famous for their work.
Chamique Holdsclaw
Chamique Holdsclaw has made a name for herself beginning in her high school years. She played at Christ The King Regional High School in Queens, New York. With Holdsclaw leading the team, they made it to four straight New York State Championships in basketball.
Holdsclaw was named a High School All-American by the WBCA. After high school, she was recruited by the University of Tennessee in 1995 and signed a letter of intent to play with the Lady Vols and Pat Summitt. Holdsclaw once again showed her skill and helped lead the Lady Vols to the first ever three consecutive women’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships in 1996-1998.
The 1998 season proved to be one of the best for Tennessee, as they went undefeated during the season with a record o 39-0, set a record for the most wins ever in a season, and won the NCAA Championship.
She won numerous awards including the Naismith trophy for Player of the Year twice, Naismith’s Player of the Century for the 1990’s, and was part of an ESPY award given to the Lady Vols as Co-Team of the Decade for the 1990’s. In the 1999 WNBA Draft, Holdsclaw was the No. 1 overall pick and was selected by the Washington Mystics.
She was named Rookie of the Year in her first season and helped the Olympic team win a gold medal the following year. After the Mystics, Holdsclaw went to the Los Angeles Sparks and then suddenly retired in 2007. She came back in 2008 and played with the Dream for one season where they made it to the playoffs. Holdsclaw requested a trade in 2010 and was traded with the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Donnette Je-Michelle Snow
Michelle Snow is also a University of Tennessee alumni and started making a name for herself in high school. Snow attended Pensacola High School where she led the team to the state championships and was named “Miss Basketball” in 1998. She was also named a WBCA All-American.
Snow signed a letter of intent to attend the University of Tennessee where she played with another standout, Kara Lawson. During the November 30, 2000 game, Snow became the third woman in NCAA college basketball history to dunk during a game. She couldn’t stop with one dunked three times that season against the University of Illinois, University of South Carolina, and Vanderbilt University.
After playing at the University of Tennessee she was the 10th overall pick in the 1st round of the WNBA draft to the Comets. She was named 2003’s Most Improved Player of the Year. Snow showed her dunking skills again when she became the second WNBA player to dunk in the 2006 All-Star game. In 2008 she played with the Atlanta Dream before being traded to the San Antonio Silver Stars.
