West Virginia Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The West Virginia Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 20th in the NCAA Division 1 standings released on March 7.

The Mountaineers will enter the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 20-11 and a Big East conference record of 11-7. The Mountaineer will face Clemson in the 2nd round of the East Region division of the NCAA Tournament.

The Mountaineers’ Season

The Mountaineers needed a win against Marquette in the second round of the Big East Tournament in order to advance to the quarterfinals. Marquette stopped this from happening and took the win and quarterfinals appearance for themselves when they finished 67-61.

The Mountaineers lost because of poor rebounding, turnovers, and lack of scoring. West Virginia has been waiting since then for their second chance at an NCAA Tournament game and got it when they were named the No. 5 seed in the East Region.

They will face No. 12 Clemson on Mar 17 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Clemson enters the tournament with a 21-11 overall record in the ACC Conference. Head Coach Bog Huggins leads the Mountaineers but he needs Kevin Jones, Joe Mazzulla, Darryl Bryant and John Flowers to be focused in order to win.

About The Team

Head Coach Bob Huggins has proved success as a program builder recruiter, and game srategist who has won 670 games as a collegiate head coach. He enters into his 29th season as Head Coach.

He has directed the Wolverines to 80 victories, the NCAA Final Four, Big East Championship, and back-to-back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Huggins’ teams have been in postseason play for 25 of his 28 seasons.

Junior Kevin Jones was selected and given Big East Honorable Mention accolades. He is 30th in school history to break 1,140 career points. He is also averaging 13.1 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game, and 1.2 assists per game. Senior Joe Mazzulla is the third among all active players in games played with 143.

He is also averaging 7.2 points per game, 3.9 rebounds per game, and 4.1 assists per game. Junior Darryl Bryant is an asset to the team and he only needs three points to become the 48th 1,000-point scorer in school history. He averages 10.9 points per game, 2.4 rebounds per game, and 3.1 assists per game. Senior John Flowers is second in the Big East in blocks. He has 157 career blocks. In addition to that he is averaging 9.6 points per game, 6.5 rebounds per game, and 1.8 assists per game.
