The Argentina national basketball team is the team composed of Argentinian basketball players that represent their country internationally. The team is governed by the Argentine Basketball Federation.
The Argentina national basketball team, both the men and the women’s team, is considered as one of the best basketball teams in the world because of their success in different international basketball competitions, in fact, the men’s team is currently the 3rd in the FIBA ranking, while the women’s team is currently the 10th in the FIBA ranking.
The Men’s Team
The Argentina national men’s basketball team started to participate in international competitions in the year 1930 at the South American Championships. The men’s team participates in different international basketball competitions such as the Olympic Games, the South American Championships, the FIBA World Championships, the Pan American Games, the FIBA Diamond Ball, the FIBA Americas Championship and the FIBA Under-19 World Championship.
The Men’s Team Achievements
The Argentina national men’s basketball team first participated in the South American Championships, where they became a runner-up in the year 1930. The men’s team had a total of twelve gold medals, these gold medals were won in the year 1934 where Argentina was the host of the event, 1935, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1966, 1976, 1979, 1987, 2001, 2004, and 2008. In the year 1932, 1939, 1945, 1960, 1961, 1969, 1971, 1977, 1981, 1985, 1991, 1997, and 2006, the Argentina national men’s team won bronze medals.
The men’s team first participated in the Summer Basketball Olympics in the year 1948 where the team ranked 15th, their second apparance as in 1952 and they ranked 4th place over all, in 1996 they ended up in the 9th place. The best achievements of the team in the Olympics was in the 2004 Summer Olympics and the 2008 Summer Olympics, where the team won gold and silver medals respectively.
The team also participated in the FIBA World Championship, their first appearance was in 1950 where Argentina was the host of the said event, and not only that ,the team had also won the gold medal in the said particular event. They were the runner ups of the 2002 FIBA World Championships.
The junior men’s team participated in the FIBA Under-19 World Championsip, which is a league for the young basketball players aged below 19 years. The Argentina junior men’s team began participating in the said league in the year 1979, and had won the bronze medal in that same year, they won another bronze medal in the 1991 FIBA Under-19 World Championships. The Argentina national basketball team first participated in the FIBA Americas Championships in the year 1980, and had won the bronze medal at that said event.
They won bronze medals in the 1993, 1999, and 2009 FIBA Americas Championships. The team won the gold medal in the year 2001, defeating the national team of Brazil with the final score of 78-59. In the Pan American Games, the team won two silver medals in the year 1950 where the team first participated in the said league, and in the year 1955. The team also won the gold medal in the 1995 Pan American Games, winning against the USA National team with the final score of 98-85.
