St. Mary’s College of Maryland Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 2nd in the NCAA Division III Middle Atlantic Region standings posted on February 28th.
The Seahawks finished the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 25-6. St. Mary’s met Middlebury College in the Elite Eight and fell 65-50.

The Seahawks’ Season

The Seahawks were hopeful going into the Elite Eight match against Middlebury College that they may be able to win and make a Final Four appearance. Middlebury College quickly destroyed that dream as they won 65-50.

Middlebury outscored the Seahawks 40-23 in the second half to take the win and Final Four appearance. Going into halftime St. Mary’s was leading 27-25, but the second half belonged to Middlebury. They shot 62.5% from the field in the second half, while the Seahawks shot 33.9% for the game, and made just 3 of 13 from the three-point area. Although this loss marked the end of the season, the senior class leaves with the most impressive resume of any four-year class.

They helped lead St. Mary’s to three NCAA appearances, three Capital Athletic Conference championship titles, three CAC regular season titles, and three consecutive 20-win seasons. Head Coach Chris Harney leads the Seahawks but depends on Alex Franz, Sam Burum, and Christian MacAuley to lead the team on the court.

About The Team

Head Coach Chris Harney is in his sixth season with the Seahawks and is the program’s second winningest coach with 91 career victories. Under Harney’s guidance the Seahawks have had two NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, two league championship crowns, two CAC regular-season titles, four consecutive winning seasons, and back-to-back-to-back 20-win seasons. Before Harney, St. Mary’s averaged 11.75 wins per season, and after Harney, they average 18.2 victories per season. He was named the CAC Coach of the Year for the second straight year.

Senior Alex Franz was selected as the CAC Player of the Year and All-CAC First Team. Franz is the school’s all-time leader in assists with 565 and steals with 311. He averages 15.7 points per game and led the conference with 142 assists and 75 steals. Senior Sam Burum was also named to the All-CAC First Team. Burum averaged 14.7 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game to go along with a 59.7% from the field.

Freshman Christian MacAuly was named CAC Rookie of the Year. MacAuly set the program’s single-season record for blocks with 77, while leading the conference in the same category with an average of 2.9 blocks per game. He also led the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game.
