St. Joseph’s College-Long Island Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The St. Joseph’s College-Long Island Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region standings posted on February 28th.

The Golden Eagles finished the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 22-7. St. Joseph’s College faced New York University and fell 107-93.

The Golden Eagles’ Season

The Golden Eagles met a tough New York University in the first round of the ECAC Metro Championship Tournament. New York shot the lights out with a massive 75.9% in the first half and 60% for the game. Unfortunately this loss in an important game is not the first for St. Joseph’s as they also lost to Purchase in the Skyline Championship game.

The loss against Purchase put the Golden Eagles season in the hands of the selection committee as they waited to hear if they would get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. They did get the at-large bid but with a win they would’ve had an automatic berth into the tournament. Head Coach John Mateyko leads the Golden Eagles, but depends on Chris Jimenez and Olivier Laurent to be successful.

About The Team

Head Coach John Mateyko leads the Golden Eagles in his 10th season at St. Joseph’s College. Under his leadership the Golden Eagles had a 22-win season and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament this year. He has an overall record of 138-101 while at St. Joseph’s College. Mateyko has also led the team to four ECAC Metro Tournaments, two NCAA appearances, Skyline Champions, and two-time Hudson Valley Champions. Mateyko will use his strong work ethic to motivate his players to another successful season next year.

Junior Chris Jimenez was named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team, Skyline Player of the Week once, and Skyline Honor Roll three times. He was also named to the NABC Atlantic Region All-District Second Team, D3Hoops All-Atlantic Region Second Team, and StrengthUSA.com’s National Athlete of the Month for March.

Jimenez averaged 15 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, 1.8 steals per game, and 2.1 assists per game. Olivier Laurent was also named to the All-Skyline Conference First Team, Elms College All-Tournament Team, and Skyline Honor Roll five times. Laurent averaged 17 points per game, scoring a total of 492 in this season alone, 4.8 rebounds per game, 3.9 assists per game, and 1.8 steals per game.
