Red Fox Women's Basketball 2010-2011

The Marist College women’s basketball team was ranked 21st in the NCAA Division 1 standings released February 28th.

The Red Foxes entered the MAAC Tournament with an overall record of 30-2 and a perfect conference record of 18-0. They have recently won the MAAC Championship with a victory over Loyola.

The Red Fox’s Season

Marist College has had a very successful season with their win over Loyola, giving them their sixth straight MAAC Championship. This is also only the second time in program history that they have had a 30-win season.

This game was won by almost 20 points but it wasn’t until the last 10 minutes that Marist was able to create such a big lead. This is indicative of the whole season with most wins being 15-plus points. There were a few close games within the season but that was a rare occasion. Marist will now have a shot at the NCAA Tournament and will hold a selection show viewing party open to the public on March 14. Brian Giorgis leads the Red Foxes as the head coach, but looks to Erica Allenspach, Corielle Yarde, and Brandy Gang for wins.

About The Team

Brian Giorgis is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Red Foxes and can boast as the programs all-time leader in wins. He has a career record of 194-62 and has been named the MAAC Coach of the Year five times, including this season. Giorgis is also an inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame. He has led Marist to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and seven consecutive MAAC regular season titles.

Senior Erica Allenspach was selected to the All-MAAC First team. She averaged 13.2 points per game, and 4.9 rebounds per game and had 86 assists and 52 steals. She has also been named the 2011 Spark Energy MAAC Basketball Championship MVP, 2011 Pepsi MAAC Player of the Year, Duel in the Desert Tournament MVP, MAAC Player of the Week twice, and has led the team in scoring on 12 occasions.

Corielle Yarde was named to the All-MAAC First Team, MAAC Player of the Week and is the team’s leading rebounder with 5.2 rebounds per game. She also averaged 12 points per game and had a 46.3 field goal percentage. Yarde has posted back-to-back double-doubles and is just shy of having 1,000-points in her career. Brandy Gang was named to the All-MAAC Third Team. She averaged 8.4 points per game and is one of three players to start all 29 games this season.

About The School

Marist College is located in beautiful Poughkeepsie, NY along the Hudson River and is recognized for its use of technology to enhance the teaching and learning process.

They have 43 Bachelor’s programs, 12 Master’s programs, and 12 Certificate programs to accommodate its almost 13,000 students. This type of school still manages to keep the class size down with a 15:1 student-teacher ratio.
