Randolph-Macon College Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The Randolph-Macon College Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 2nd in the NCAA Division III South Region standings released on February 28th.

The Yellow Jackets finished the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 25-5. Randolph-Macon faced St. Mary’s of Maryland and lost 68-53.

The Yellow Jackets Season

The Yellow Jackets suffered a tough, season ending loss against St. Mary’s of Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. St. Mary’s made 27 of 55 for the night from the floor and three players reached double figure scoring.

The Yellow Jackets made 16 of 39 shots from the floor, including just 1 of 11 from behind the three point line. St. Mary’s outplayed the Yellow Jackets as they shot 49.1% from the field, outrebounded them 32-22, and had 22 points off Yellow Jacket turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets had 17 points off St. Mary’s turnovers and a huge 30 points from the bench. Despite this loss, the Yellow Jackets can still be proud of their 20-wins for the fourth consecutive season, reached the 20-win mark for the fifth time in the last six years, and were the ODAC Champs. Head Coach Nathan Davis leads the Yellow Jackets but is dependent on Danny Jones, Brandon Braxton, and Eric Pugh to be successful.

About The Team

Head Coach Nathan Davis is in his second season with Randolph-Macon and has led the team to two of its most successful seasons in program history. Last season he led the team to 26 wins, the program’s first trip to the Final Four, and a school record 13-0 record to start the season. This season wasn’t as successful, however, the team still earned 25 wins and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Senior Danny Jones was named to the All-ODAC First Team, D3Hoops.com All-South Region Third Team, NABC All-South Region First Team, and was chosen to play in the NABC All-Star game. Jones finishes top on the team with 13.9 points per game and 5.2 rebounds to go along with 61.6% from the field. He will finish his four year career with 1,277 points, which ranked 23rd all-time in school history.

Seniors Brandon Braxton and Eric Pugh weren’t awarded for their efforts this season, but their contributions helped take the team as far as it did. Braxton averaged 11.1 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. Pugh averaged 10.9 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game.
