Purdue University Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The Purdue University Men’s Basketball Team is ranked 9th in the NCAA Division 1 standings released March 7th.

The Boilermakers entered the Big Ten Tournament with an overall record of 25-7 and a conference record of 14-4. Purdue faced Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals and fell 74-56.

Purdue’s Season

The Purdue men recently faced Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament and will now wait for CBS’ Selection Sunday to see if they earned an at-large bid.

The Boilermakers received a No. 2 seed into the tournament. Purdue had beat Michigan State in the previous two meetings, but the Spartans were out for blood this time. Purdue attempted several second half runs to cut the point deficit, however, Michigan State gained the lead and maintained it.

Purdue’s season previous to this was very successful. Most games won were by a 10-15 point margin, with 3 of 4 close scoring games resulting in a loss. It will be up to the selection committee as to whether or not Purdue will end on a loss or continue their season. Head Coach Matt Painter leads the Boilermakers, but looks to duo JaJuan Johnson and E’Twaun Moore for big plays.

About The Team

Matt Painter is in his sixth season as Head Coach of Purdue. He is no stranger to this program as this is also his alma mater. Perhaps his familiarity with the program is what has made him successful.

In his career he has had back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances, four-consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, and a regular-season Big Ten title and tournament championship. Painter has averaged more than 22 wins per season during his tenure, including 25 wins in the past three seasons. Painter was named this seasons Big Ten Coach of the Year, his third career award.

Seniors JaJuan Johnson and E’twaun Moore were named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Considered to be one of the top recruiting classes of the 2006-07 season, these players have not disappointed. Johnson was also named Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team.

He averaged 20.7 points, 2.5 blocks, 8.3 rebounds, and 1 steal per game. Johnson has also scored career highs of 1,800 points, 800 rebounds and 250 blocks. Moore was also named this years Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. He averaged 17.7 points, 3.4 assists, 1 steal, and 4.7 rebounds per game, with an assist-turnover ratio of 2.18. Moore has a career record of over 2,000 points, 500 rebounds and 350 assists.

About The School

Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, IN and has a variety of majors and degree programs to choose from. Purdue has also gained attention for having a high student retention rate, one of the nation’s best ROTC programs, and part of the Top 20 for undergraduate student success. The University was also listed as among the “100 best values” according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
