North Carolina Tar Heels Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The University of North Carolina’s Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 6th in the NCAA Division 1 standings released March 7th.
The Tar Heels entered the ACC Tournament quarterfinals with an overall record of 25-6 and a conference record of 14-2. They faced Miami in the quarterfinals and won at the buzzer 61-59.

The Tar Heel’s Season

The Tar Heel’s have had one wild ride. In the recent game against Miami, UNC had its work cut out for them. After being behind by 19-points, the Tar Heels came back to win the game by a last second shot. This is the biggest comeback win in the ACC Tournament history.

North Carolina is used to close games with almost half the season’s wins and losses coming down to a 5-point margin or less. They can handle the pressure and this will serve them well in the long run. After a victory over Duke, the Tar Heels were also outright ACC regular season champs.

They earned the No.1 seed into the ACC Tournament. Head Coach Roy Williams leads the Tar Heels, but on the court its Tyler Zeller, John Henson, and Harrison Barnes that lead.

About The Team

Roy Williams is in his 6th season as head coach of the Tar Heels and has had the most successful campaign in the history of North Carolina Basketball. Some of the accolades Williams has achieved are two national titles, three Final Four appearances, four Final Eight appearances, four NCAA Tournament No. 1 seeds, four ACC regular season titles, two ACC Tournament crowns, and four 30-win seasons. In addition to this Williams is also a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and was this years ACC Coach of the Year.

Junior Tyler Zeller was named to the All-ACC Second Team and Academic All-America First Team. He leads the Tar Heels with 14.6 points per game. Zeller was also the recipient of the Skip Prosser award, which is given to the top scholar-athlete. His game winning shot put them past Miami and into the ACC semifinals.

Sophomore John Henson was also named to the All-ACC Second Team, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and National Defensive Player of the Year. He averages 12.4 points per game and 10.6 rebounds per game in ACC play. He also has the second highest school record for most blocks in a season with 94.

Freshman Harrison Barnes was also selected to the All-ACC Second Team and is averaging 14.1 points per game in ACC play. Barnes was also selected as ACC Rookie of the Year. He was the top scorer in conference play with 15.9 points per game and ACC Rookie of the Week three times.
