Miami Hurricanes Women Basketball 2010-2011

The University of Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team was ranked 10th in the NCAA Division 1 standings posted February 28th.

The Hurricanes will enter the ACC semifinals March 5 against the University of North Carolina. Miami will be entering the semifinals with an overall record of 27-3 and an ACC Conference record of 12-2.

Miami’s Season

This season has been a breakthrough for the Miami Hurricanes. Last season the Hurricanes had a conference record of 4-10 and had a number 12 seed in the ACC Tournament.

This year has shown great improvement with a conference record of 12-2 and a number 2 seed in the tournament. They have had the same starting lineup the whole season, showing they found their winning combination and the players have stayed healthy all season.

This is tied for the most in the nation with one starting lineup. Not only have they found a lineup that works for them, they have won 25 of the past 27 games. Miami is led by Head Coach Katie Meier but her top on court players are Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams.

About The Team

Head Coach Katie Meier goes into her sixth season this year as the Hurricanes head coach.

She was able to lead them to a 20-0 win record of home games and is winner of the ACC Coach of the Year Award. Meier has led them to a regular season title, which is the first for the Miami program. If she can win two more games she will be the third coach in program history to reach her 100th win at Miami.

Although Meier leads, the court belongs to juniors Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams. Johnson was named as ACC Player of the Year, All-ACC First Team, and All-Defensive Team. She ranked Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, and assists. Johnson also had 3 30-point performances and 11 20-point performances. Williams is Johnson’s sidekick and together the magic duo is almost unstoppable.

Williams was also named to the All-ACC First Team along with Johnson. Williams was also the league’s leading scorer with 21.7 point per game, but her conference average was 24 points per game. She has been named ACC Player of the Week four times this season and her career six nods are the most of all current ACC players.

Miami is the only team in the nation that had three players averaging 3 or more steals per game.
