Marietta College Men’s Basketball 2010-2011

The Marietta College Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 2nd in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region standings posted on February 28th.

The Pioneers finished the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 27-4. Marietta faced Whitworth University in the Sweet 16 matchup and fell 93-77.

The Pioneers’ Season

The Pioneers have had an extremely successful season this year, as they were the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions.

Marietta set a school record with 27 wins and made the deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history. Marietta fought hard against Whitworth University but couldn’t overcome them. Whitworth shot 60% from the field for the night and jumped out to a 20-point lead in the opening half. The Pioneers would get to within 9 points but that would be as close as they would come. Marietta shot 51% from the field, which wasn’t enough to take down Whitworth. Head Coach Jon VanderWal leads the Pioneers but looks to Trevor Halter and Kevin Knab to win games.

About The Team

Head Coach Jon VanderWal is in his fourth season with the Pioneers and has taken them to new heights. He led the Pioneers to a 27-4 record, the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships, as well as a NCAA Division III Sweet 16 appearance.

VanderWal was named this season’s OAC, NABC All-Great Lakes Region, and D3Hoop.com All-Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. He also helped Marietta to break the school records for best start (13-0), total wins (27), and highest ranking.

Junior Trevor Halter was named OAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, OAC Player of the Year, All-OAC First Team, NABC All-Great Lakes Region First Team, and D3Hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region First Team. Halter has scored 435 points, 108 rebounds, 40 assists, 19 steals, and 15 blocks for the season. He shot 53.2% from the field, 45.5% from long range, and 64.6% from the free throw line.

Halter has scored over 1,200 career points and scored double figures in 23 games. Junior Kevin Knab was also named to the All-OAC First Team, NABC All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, and D3Hoops.com All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. He as accumulated 178 rebounds, 29 blocks, 425 points, 39 assists, and 18 steals. Knab averages 15.2 points per game, 6.4 rebounds per game, and 1 block per game. He has scored double figures in 25 games and posted three double-doubles.

About The School

Marietta College is located in Marietta, OH and is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian, undergraduate, residential, contemporary liberal arts school. There are over 1,500 students that attend Marietta from more than 40 states and more than 10 countries and choose from over 40 undergraduate majors. Programs include leadership, petroleum engineering, fine arts, sciences, athletic training, education and journalism.

There are over 120 students working on their master’s degree to be either a Physician Assistant, Corporate Media, or Psychology. The college boasts of small class sizes with a 13:1 student-faculty ratio.
