Lander Bearcats Women Basketball 2010-2011

The Lander University Women’s Basketball Team was ranked 6th in the NCAA Division II standings posted on March 8th.

The bearcats finished the NCAA Division II Tournament with an overall record of 29-4. They faced Clayton State in the Sweet Sixteen and fell 60-76.

The Bearcats’ Season

The Bearcats took their season far as they made an appearance at the Sweet Sixteen. They faced No. 2 Clayton State and loss 60-76. Clayton State used a 14-0 run in the second half to gain a comfortable lead on Lander.

The first half saw many back and forth runs by both teams as Lander fought to come back and Clayton State fought to keep their lead. Lander used several 7-0 runs to try and close the point margin but Clayton shot the lights out in three-pointers to keep their distance from the Bearcats.

Lander outrebounded Clayton State, 35-22, but their long stretches without scoring hurt them in the long run. The Bearcats season was marked with both close wins and blowouts showing they could win in a stressful situation and put away the teams that they were better than. Head Coach Kevin Pederson leads the Bearcats and looks to Shannon McKever and Jasmine Judge to gain the victory.

About The Team

Head Coach Kevin Pederson is in his sixth season at Lander University. Last season was the highlight of his career as he led the Bearcats to a school-best 27-4 record, the Peach Belt regular-season championship, a final No. 11 national ranking, and Lander’s first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance. He has been named the Peach Belt Conference and WBCA Region 3 Coach of the Year. Pederson has now posted four-consecutive 20-win seasons.

Senior Shannon McKever was named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year. McKever is only the third Lander player to receive this honor. She is also only one of four Peach Belt players in history to get over 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds, and is sixth on the league’s all-time scoring list with over 1,600 career points and fourth in rebounding at 1,059.

McKever averaged 17.7 points per game, 3.1 blocks per game, 10.3 rebounds per game, and a double-double in every game. Junior Jasmine Judge is the top three-point specialist in the country and was named to the All-PBC Third Team. Judge is Lander’s all-time leading three-point shooter with 280. She averages 12.1 points per game and has made a three in every game this season, with a high of 8 at Georgia College.
