Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball 2010-2011

Marquette Universities Golden Eagles Women’s Basketball Team was ranked 20th in the NCAA Division 1 standings posted on February 28.

The Golden Eagles entered the Big East Tournament with an overall record of 23-8 and a conference record of 10-6. They faced Rutgers in the Big East Championship quarterfinals game.

The Golden Eagles Season

Marquette entered the game against Rutgers hoping to gain their first win over Rutgers in the history of the two teams meeting. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and Rutgers continued the 8-0 streak against Marquette.

The Golden Eagles will await the NCAA Selection Show and look for its ninth invite to the tournament. Marquette hasn’t had back-to-back losses this season, so this marks the first back-to-back loss for the team.

They have also had eight games this season that were decided by five-or-fewer points, showing they don’t crack under pressure. Terri Mitchell leads the Golden Eagles, but on the court she looks to Angel Robinson, Tatiyiana McMorris, and Katherine Plouffe.

About The Team

Head Coach Terri Mitchell enters her 15th season with the Golden Eagles. In her career she has earned a record of 272-162 making her shy of 20 wins per season, 12 trips to the postseason tournament, eight consecutive postseason berths, two trips to the NCAA Tournament Second Round, eight 20-win seasons, and winning the WNIT in 2008.

Senior Angel Robinson was named to the All-Big East First Team. She led the Golden Eagles with 13.3 points per game, including 13.4 in the Big East Tournament.

During postseason play, she led the league in minutes played with 37.9 and was in the top 15 of the conference for 13.4 points per game, 4.8 assists per game, 1.9 steals per game, and a 1.5 assist/turnover ratio. McMorris was one of Marquette’s most improved players and averaged 15.3 points per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, and 3.5 assists per game in Big East play.

In addition to this she scored double figures in 20 games and back-to-back 20-plus point games. McMorris scored 66 3-pointers, 43 in Big East play, giving her the honor of All-Big East Second Team. Plouffe was selected to be on the All-Big East Freshman Team. She started in 26 of 29 games and averaged 7.1 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game. She has also earned Big East Rookie of the Week.
