German basketball Coaches

Germany is one of the many European countries that participate in different international basketball leagues although basketball is not their number one sport.

The German national basketball team has also achieved medals in different tournaments, thanks to the individual players of the team and to the team’s coach. In a little while we will know who the best German basketball coaches are.

Svetislav Pešić

Svetislav Pešić was born on August 28, 1949 in Novi Sad, Serbia, SFR Yugoslavia. Along with his Serbian citizenship, he also possesses German citizenship. He is a former Serbian professional basketball player and is the present coach of a Siberian basketball team named Power Electronics Valencia.

During his professional basketball career, he led his team KK Bosna to win the European Championship Cup in season 1978-1979. He became the coach of the German national basketball team in 1987 up to 1993. He led the German national basketball team to win their first and only gold medal in the European Championship in the year 1993.

He also coached in the German league in 1997 to 2000 and the German national cups in 1997 and 1999. Other than Germany, Svetislav Pešić also coached different teams in different countries.

He led the Yugoslavia national team in winning their two gold medals in the 2001 European Championship and 2002 FIBA World Championship. He also led the Yugoslavian Junior team to victory in the 1987 FIBA World Junior Championship defeating the USA national team twice during the tournament. Because of these achievements Svetislav Pešić is considered as one of the most successful German basketball coaches in Europe.

Dirk Bauermann

Dirk Bauermann was born on December 10, 1957 in Oberhausen. He is the current head coach of the German national basketball team. He is not only the coach of the German team but also he was the coach of different Clubs in Germany. He led the team named TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen to win German championships in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996. He also led Brose Baskets Bamberg in winning their German championships in 2005 and in 2007.

In 1990 and 1991 Dirk Bauermann was awarded coach of the year with the team Leverkusen and with the team Bamberg in 2003 and 2004. He became the head coach of the German national basketball team in 2003, after a previous stint in 1994. During his coaching career as the head coach of the German team in 1994 he helped the team to be in the twelfth place in the 1994 FIBA World Championships.

When he came back to be the head coach of the team in 2003, he led the team into success. His greatest achievement as the head coach of the German national basketball team was winning the silver medal in the 2005 FIBA European championship. He also led the team to the eighth and fifth place in the FIBA World championship and FIBA European championship respectively. If there is one coach who has beaten the drum more loudly than anyone else in relation to the need for young players to emerge at this level, it has to be Dirk Bauerman.

He is a passionate campaigner in trying to persuade club teams in Germany to trust and bring through more home-grown German players, which is why he is considered as one of the best German basketball coaches today.
