Egyptian National Basketball Team

Even if football is the most popular sport in Egypt, they proved that they can also compete in the world of basketball.

The Egypt National Basketball Team is the official team that represents their country in international basketball competitions such as the Eurobasket, Olympic Games, Mediterranean Games, FIBA Africa Championships, and the FIBA World Championship.

The EuroBasket is the chief basketball competition administered by FIBA Europe and disputed by men’s national teams every two years. It is also recognized as the FIBA European Basketball Championship. In the 1937 Eurobasket, the Egyptians ranked last but they became more successful in the 1947 Eurobasket, their next appearance.

They won all three of their preliminary group matches and their first semifinal group game when they once again contested during the 1953 Eurobasket held in Moscow, Russia. However, out of the 8 teams that qualified for the final round, they ranked last. In total, they have made 4 appearances in the Eurobasket where they got a gold medal in 1949 and a bronze medal in 1947.

Also, Egypt has been participating in the basketball competitions of the international organization of national basketball groups, International Basketball Federation or FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball Amateur).

It manages international basketball competitions, enumerates the equipment and facilities needed, identifies the international rules of basketball, controls the transfer of athletes across countries, and manages the appointment of international referees. It’s organized into five zones and these are Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

One of the competitions that FIBA conducts is the FIBA Africa Championship, the men’s basketball continental championship of Africa played every other year and also serves to select teams that are eligible for joining in the quadrennial FIBA World Championship and the Olympic basketball tournament. Egypt made 19 appearances in the FIBA Africa Championship: bronze medals in 1978, 1985, 1992, 1999, 2001, and 2003; silver medals in 1972, 1981, 1987, 1989, and 1993; and gold medals in 1962, 1964, 1970, 1975, and in 1983.

The FIBA World Championship on the other hand is an international basketball competition contested by the men’s national teams of the members of FIBA. It is the largest competition in the world in the field of basketball.

The winning team will receive Naismith Trophy and was first awarded in 1967. Unfortunately, of all 7 appearances of the Egyptian National Basketball Team, they haven’t garnered any medals.

Egypt National Basketball Team participated in the Olympic Games in 1984 in Los Angeles, USA and 1888 in Seoul, Korea and in both came 12th place.
