Clayton State Lakers Basketball 2010-2011

The Clayton State University Women’s Basketball Team was ranked 2nd in the NCAA Division II Standings posted on March 8th.

The Lakers will enter the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional with an overall record of 32-1. Clayton State will face Bentley in the Elite Eight on March 22.

The Lakers’ Season

The No. 2 Lakers will face the No. 15 Bentley in the Elite Eight. A victory over Peach Belt Conference rival, Lander, in the Sweet Sixteen gave them advancement to the Elite Eight. They have only suffered one loss to USC Aiken in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

This loss ended the longest winning streak in program history. In this game, the Lakers only shot 33% from the field and 31% from 3-point range. They were able to force USC Aiken into 19 turnovers and only trailed 30-24 at halftime and eventually made their way back as the game went into overtime. Head Coach Dennis Cox leads the Lakers but looks to Tanisha Woodard and Teshymia Tillman to take control.

About The Team

Head Coach Dennis Cox is in his seventh season at Clayton State University. For the second straight year Cox has received the Whack Hyder State of Georgia Women’s College Coach of the Year.

He is the first coach to earn the award in two straight seasons in the state. Cox has led the Lakers to becoming the second team in the Peach Belt Conference history to go undefeated in the regular season and their 32 victories is the most in a season for a Peach Belt women’s team. Under Cox’s guidance the Lakers captured their fourth Peach Belt regular season title. Cox was named Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the second time.

Junior Tanisha Woodard was named to the All-Peach Belt First Team and Peach Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year. This is the first individual postseason award since the 2001-02 season. She averages 3.2 steals per game and a career 283. Woodard also averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds per game, with 123 assists, 94 steals, and 33 blocked shots.

She has scored double-figures in all but 9 games this season. Senior Teshymia Tillman was named to the All-PBC First Team and is the teams leading scorer. She averages 15 points and 5 rebounds per game, while shooting 52% from the field. Tillman has reached double-figures in all but four games so far this season.

Clayton State University is located in Morrow, GA and is 15 miles from downtown Atlanta. Currently, there are 8 master’s degree programs and 40 baccalaureate degree majors for the 6,600 students to choose from. U.S.

News & World Report ranks the university as having the most diverse student population among comprehensive baccalaureate-level colleges and universities in the Southern United States. Clayton State is also the third public university to require that each student have access to a notebook computer.
