Alabama Chargers Men's Basketball 2010-2011

Alabama-Huntsville Men Ranked 7th In NCAA Division II Standings 2010-2011

The University of Alabama-Huntsville Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 7th in the NCAA Division II standings posted on March 8th. The Chargers finished their season with an overall record of 29-5. Alabama-Huntsville faced Minnesota State in the Central Region semifinals and fell 95-91.

The Chargers’ Season

The Chargers had a very successful season despite their early exit from the NCAA Tournament. The game against Minnesota State was back-and-forth with 13 lead changes. The Chargers built a 14-point lead in the first half but Minnesota caught up and took the lead going into the second half.

Both teams had hot shooting with the Chargers going 29 of 52 from the floor for 55.8%, while Minnesota State shot 33 of 65 for 50.8%. Minnesota, however, had a 3-25 advantage on the boards including 16 offensive boards that led to 17 second-change points.

Alabama-Huntsville has plenty to be proud of with their first Elite Eight appearance, the first South Region Championship, the most Division II wins in school history, and the first top-5 ranking ever. Head Coach Lennie Acuff leads the Chargers but relies on Josh Magette and Zane Campbell to get the job done.

About The Team

Head Coach Lennie Acuff is in his 14th season at Alabama-Huntsville. Under Acuff, the Chargers have enjoyed 12 of 13 winning seasons, appeared in the Gulf South Conference tournament 10 times, won at least a share of the three GSC Eastern Division Championships and earned four trips to the NCAA Division II tournament.

The GSC tournament berths, GSC East championships and NCAA tournament appearances are all first time accomplishments for Alabama’s program. Acuff has also been named GSC East Division Coach of the Year four times and was also named this season’s Coach of the Year by the NABC.

Junior Josh Magette and Sophomore Zane Campbell were named to the NABC All-America Team, All-South District First Team, and the Daktronics All-South Region First Team. Magette is the all-time assist leader for the Chargers and joins the exclusive 1,000-point club.

He averaged 12 points per game and almost 8 assists per game. Sophomore Zane Campbell leads the Chargers in scoring with 14 points per game and was named the Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Year. Both Players have thoroughly contributed to the success of the Charger’s season and the program in general by their sportsmanship and outstanding efforts this season.
