The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 3rd in the NCAA Division III Northeast Region standings posted on February 28th.
The Engineers finished the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 23-6. WPI faced Amherst in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and lost 92-70.
The Engineers’ Season
The Engineers ended their season in a second round loss to Amherst 92-70. This game was close until right before the second half when Amherst used an 18-1 run to take a commanding 44-23 edge four minutes later. Going into halftime the Engineers trailed 48-20.
The second half brought WPI closer as they used a 17-4 run to get within 10 points of the Amherst. This would be as close as they would get before Amherst took over again. Amherst finished with 53.4% from the field and nearly half their offense came from three-pointers, as they were 15 for 29 from behind the arc.
They also outrebounded the Engineers 44-35. WPI finished the night shooting 32% from the field, only making 22 of 68. They were, however 79.2% from the charity stripe. Head Coach Chris Bartley leads the Engineers but uses Jeffrey Robinson and Matt Carr to win games.
About The Team
Head Coach Christ Bartley is in his tenth season with the Engineers and guided the team to an 11-1 conference regular season record. He has an overall record of 173-45 and has made the NCAA Tournament for the past six seasons under Bartley’s guidance. Bartley also earned his fourth NEWMAC Coach of the Year honor this season.
Senior Jeffrey Robinson was named NEWMAC Player of the Year and All-NEWMAC First Team. Robinson was also named to the D3Hoops.com All-Northeast Region Second Team, NABC Northeast All-District First Team, and ECAC New England All-Star. He led the team in scoring with 15.8 points per game and 2.6 assists. Robinson can be proud of his 89.4% from the free throw line and 51 three-pointers made this season.
Robinson also totaled 1,282 career points after transferring to WPI after his freshman season. Junior Matt Carr was also named to the All-NEWMAC First Team and Second Team Academic All-American. He averaged 12.2 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game, along with 36 steals and 47 blocks. Carr has achieved six double-doubles this season and was twice named the NEWMAC Player of the Week.
